This dramatic basalt monolith rises 556 metres above the south-west coast, visible from much of the island.

Its caves once sheltered escaped slaves, giving the mountain deep historical and symbolic weight.

UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site for this maroon heritage in 2008.

A guided hiking trail leads partway up, with sweeping lagoon views along the way.
