Le Morne Brabant’s slopes were once a refuge for slaves who escaped into its caves and cliffs.
UNESCO inscribed the mountain as a World Heritage Site in 2008 for this symbolic history.
A memorial near the base honours those who sought freedom on the mountain.
It remains a powerful site of remembrance across the Indian Ocean region.
